Everyone faces allergic problems in one way or other. Those
who have a weaker immune system are more prone to allergies. Allergies almost
affect all parts of our body. Starting from eyes to toes, anything could be
affected and causes for allergy also could be numerous. Be it the air you
breathe or the food you eat or clothes you wear, - anything could be a reason
for allergy.
What is
allergy?
Our body is equipped with an immune system powered by white
blood corpuscles. Whenever the safety and health of your body comes under the
attack of Bacteria or Virus or Fungus, the White Blood Corpuscles fight them
and act as a guardian for you. But sometimes, they do even over react to
threats that are not existing. On such cases your immune system secretes a
liquid called Histamine to fight the allergens even though they are harmless.
Such over secretion is the cause for most of the allergies.
There are lots of allergies identified but the most common
allergies are dust allergy and skin allergy.
Who is
affected by Allergy?
Allergies are also hereditary. If one of your parents has
allergy, there is a lot of possibility that you may also get it. It is
understanding about the allergens that are passed on from our parents through
genes. Even though you think that he
pollen and dust are not harmful, your genes do not accept hat and start
fighting them and in the process giving you much discomfort and pain.
If your immune system is weak, even then allergy could
attack you in any form. It could attack when you are recovering from an
infectious disease. Pregnant women are also more prone to allergies as their
body defenses are weak.
Types
of Allergy:
There are quite a number of allergies known to us which
includes dust allergy, skin allergy, food allergy, pet allergy, drug allergy,
latex allergy, hay fever allergy etc.
Dust
Allergy:
This is the most common of the allergies. This happens when
you inhale something that your immune system thinks is harmful to you. The
normal symptoms of dust allergy are regular sneezing, running nose or a stuffed
up feeling in the nose, reddish and itching eyes with tears welling without any
reason, throat irritation, wheezing, irregular breath or difficulty to breath
and a feeling of heaviness in the chest.
Dust
allergy initiators:
Mites: Mites
are tiny beings that are found in plenty in your beds, sofas curtains, foot
rests etc. They just require a moist and cool atmosphere to survive. They could
not be removed completely and these mites are not the direct reason for dust
allergy. The wastes produced by the mites float in the air and that too during
the cleaning process they come out in plenty that are not visible to our eyes.
Pollens
& Molds: Pollens are found in gardens and are very soft,
fine and small spongy things produced by plants and trees. Due to their less
weight they get carried away by the air and reaches your nostrils. They are not
harmful but your immune system might thing them as an intruder and start reacting
to it in a big way.
Cockroaches: Cockroaches are present everywhere in your own house or in
your neighborhood. They shed tiny wastes and they float in the air.
Pet
allergies: Dogs, cats, rabbits or horses shed hair at regular
intervals. As they are fine and weightless they travel easily in the air.
How to
avoid Allergies?
Prevention is always better than cure. Since you now know
about the common allergy causing allergens, you can simply try to avoid them. Cover
your beds and pillows with anti-allergen materials. Wash them regularly. Keep
your house and surroundings clean. Do not use porous mats or carpets that can
accumulate dust. Wear a mask while cleaning your house or garden. Stay away
from pets and do not allow them in your beds. Get rid of cockroaches. You can
have a hygrometer that measures humidity and do not allow the humidity to go
beyond 50 or 55. Use micro filters in your room heaters and air conditioners to
remove even the fine dusts.
